Polyphenols from fruits and vegetables have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and are associated with a decreased risk of obesity, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. A daily polyphenol intake of 400 to 500 mg is recommended for optimal health. However, most Americans fail to meet this recommendation as per the Academy for Nutrition and Dietetics.
Goode Health is an excellent source of polyphenols. One scoop of the base formula contains 200 mg for Vanilla Spice flavor and 250 mg for Moroccan Chocolate. The fully boosted version provides over 400 mg of polyphenols.
The goal of this study was to gain insights into the effect of daily Goode Health consumption, along with a healthy diet, on body weight and cholesterol markers. These pilot findings were intended to inform a larger study in the future.
Thirteen generally healthy participants aged 24-71 were recruited from the local community near Greenwich, Connecticut. Participants had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 23.8-40.7 kg/m2. Exclusion criteria included the use of medications for weight management or blood sugar control and serious medical conditions necessitating therapeutic diet restrictions.
The study was an open label trial with one interventional arm. Body weight was measured at baseline and again at the end of the 4-week period. Finger prick samples were collected on a blood spot card before the study began and again at the end of the 4-week period to measure total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Blood spot samples were sent to an independent lab in Oregon for analysis.
All participants consumed two scoops of Goode Health as a daily breakfast replacement for 4 weeks in addition to a balanced, whole foods-based diet for other meals. To ensure compliance, all lunches and dinners were provided by SUPR Food Kitchen in Greenwich, CT. Participants were able to choose their own meals from a predetermined menu with the assistance of a Registered Dietitian to ensure appropriate caloric intake. Participants picked up pre-cooked meals from the restaurant twice per week to reheat and eat at home. Participants also met with a Registered Dietitian every week for support and accountability. All food and beverage consumption was recorded in a food diary and reviewed weekly by the Registered Dietitian. All of the meals offered at SUPR Food Kitchen are made with no seed oils, hormones, antibiotics or preservatives. Choosing meals that uphold these standards help with inflammation, gut health and overall health.
A total of thirteen participants completed the study and provided weight measurements at baseline and again after four weeks. Final blood test results were received from seven participants, with one being excluded due to poor sampling technique resulting in lab error. Six participants did not complete the final blood test. The biomarkers analyzed in this study were compared to their baseline measurements, with each participant acting as their own control.
Every participant in the study experienced weight loss, with an average of 2.97% or 6 pounds over four weeks. This is noteworthy, as it is consistent with the national standard of 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week. Cholesterol markers also demonstrated significant improvement, with total cholesterol decreasing by 26.83% and LDL cholesterol decreasing by 42.66%.
The current study highlighted that daily intake of 2 scoops of Goode Health over a 4-week period, along with a healthy diet, resulted in a significant reduction of body weight, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. The results were in alignment with a previous study at University of Texas at Arlington, which showed significant improvements in cholesterol markers and endothelial cell function after using Goode Health for 2 weeks.
